Two decades after its initial publication, a widely read management book has been updated. Specifically, the latest version is designed for a corporate landscape increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence (AI), market saturation, and rapid technological shift.
Blue Ocean Strategy is authored by INSEAD Professors W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. Now, the book has returned in an enhanced 20th-anniversary edition, published by Harvard Business Review Press. Impressively, since its 2005 debut, the text has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide in 49 languages.
The book’s framework encourages business leaders to seek out uncontested market space, or “blue oceans.” Therefore, new demand can be generated. This is instead of competing for market share in overcrowded, highly price-sensitive sectors, what the authors term “red oceans,”
The 2026 edition attempts to answer a pressing question for modern commercial executives. Specifically, how does a 20-year-old strategy model hold up in an era where AI tools commoditise traditional products and services?
Market Creation in the Age of AI
The updated release includes a new preface examining the impact of generative artificial intelligence on corporate strategy. As such, the authors argue competing on operational efficiency alone is no longer enough to protect profit margins.
Instead, the updated text highlights how market-creating moves allow companies to apply new technologies. This is without getting drawn into commoditised price wars.
To illustrate this, the 20th-anniversary edition introduces several new case studies:
NVIDIA’s Semiconductor Pivot: A detailed analysis tracing how NVIDIA moved beyond head-to-head graphics hardware competition. Instead, they established a dominant position in AI computing infrastructure and software ecosystems.
Taylor Swift’s Entertainment Model: A look at how the artist bypassed traditional music industry constraints by restructuring direct-to-consumer relationships, event cinema distribution, and intellectual property ownership.
Expanded Industry Library: Over 50 new case studies across diverse commercial sectors, offering practical examples of businesses expanding beyond traditional industry boundaries.
The Challenge for B2B Leaders
For commercial directors and revenue leaders, the book’s core premise remains a useful lens through which to view current pipeline friction and margin erosion. When every vendor in a category adopts similar sales tech and messaging, buyer engagement drops and price becomes the primary differentiator.
“The need for organisations to create new market space has never been greater,” noted Professors Kim and Mauborgne. “In a world being reshaped by rapid technological change and heightened competition, looking beyond existing industry boundaries offers a way to create new demand.”
Francisco Veloso, Dean of INSEAD, added that the framework remains particularly relevant as executive teams re-evaluate growth plans for 2027: “20 years after its introduction, the toolkit offers a structured way for leaders to approach new business development during periods of significant market disruption.”
The enhanced edition of Blue Ocean Strategy is available now via Harvard Business Review Press and major booksellers.
