£2m Innovate UK Investment to Fast-Track Advanced Materials

Innovate UK is investing £2 million into 23 feasibility studies. Their aim is to accelerate advanced materials innovations across key UK growth sectors.

The projects represent the first wave of support delivered through the National Materials Innovation Programme. This is an initiative announced as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan within the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy. The aim is to bring together people, expertise, and investment. Therefore, turning the UK’s world-leading materials capability into tangible, real-world economic impact.

The direct funding enables businesses to assess both the technical and commercial viability of high-potential innovations. Hence, building the critical evidence required for future development and scale-up.

Why Materials Matter for UK Manufacturing

Materials underpin almost every sector driving economic growth and everyday technology. From batteries, medical devices, and renewable energy systems to transport and sustainable packaging. So, advances in materials science are essential to solving some of the UK’s primary industrial, environmental, and societal challenges.

The National Materials Innovation Programme is delivered jointly by Innovate UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It will connect businesses, researchers, investors, and end-users to bridge the gap between initial discovery and widespread commercial adoption.

Turning Ideas into Real-World Commercial Impact

The 23 funded projects assess ideas across six high-growth themes identified in the National Materials Innovation Strategy. In addition, there is a dedicated strategic focus on metamaterials and metasurfaces. Together, the cohort explores ways to strengthen UK capability across clean energy, future healthcare, sustainable construction, and next-generation consumer products.

Featured projects within the first cohort include:

M-Spin: Exploring a novel high-performance material designed to increase green hydrogen production efficiency whilst lowering costs, supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner energy.

Bounce-Biomedical: Developing a biodegradable implant that helps patients recover faster from serious knee injuries, reducing the long-term reliance on full knee replacements.

Reflecting on the investment, Bruce Adderley, Director of Advanced Manufacturing at Innovate UK, highlighted that advanced materials are fundamental to the technologies and industries driving future economic growth, building resilience, and supporting a sustainable economy. He noted that the National Materials Innovation Programme helps businesses test ambitious ideas, build strong partnerships, and move world-leading research towards real-world application.

Key Takeaways for Growth Hub Readers

  • R&D Feasibility Funding: Grants for early-stage feasibility studies provide a low-risk framework for SMEs and manufacturing firms to test high-potential concepts before committing capital to full-scale production.
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: Accessing national research infrastructure via Innovate UK and EPSRC enables growth-stage firms to build valuable partnerships across supply chains, universities, and private investment networks.
  • Strategic Alignment: Aligning internal R&D roadmaps with key national themes, such as clean tech, advanced healthcare, and sustainable manufacturing, positions businesses favorably for future funding calls under the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy.
