In a major win for the UK’s digital economy, London-based Kraken has been selected to manage the renewable energy portfolio of Dutch firm Pure Energie. This partnership highlights how British innovation is driving the global energy transition while bringing international investment back into the UK.
Furthermore, the deal proves that the UK is a world leader in “operating systems” for the energy grid. By exporting this AI-powered technology, Kraken is helping to balance international markets and strengthen the UK’s reputation as a tech powerhouse.
Orchestrating the Future of Energy
Kraken’s platform will manage a diverse mix of wind, solar, and battery assets across the Netherlands. Specifically, the system coordinates grid-scale generation and consumer demand as one intelligent portfolio. Consequently, Pure Energie can react to market changes in real time.
The partnership delivers several key benefits:
- Maximised Asset Value: The AI optimises generation and storage to ensure peak financial performance.
- Reduced Imbalance: By coordinating supply and demand, the platform lowers operational costs for the utility.
- Grid Resilience: The system helps Dutch TSO TenneT manage congestion caused by volatile weather patterns.
- Market Access: Kraken provides seamless integration for intraday trading and ancillary services.
Initially, 20 sites will be onboarded in the first half of 2026. Afterwards, the companies plan to expand the portfolio even further.
A Solid Foundation for Growth
Kraken’s entry into this partnership includes a suite of advanced services, such as intraday trading, day-ahead curtailment, and imbalance optimisation. This level of integration provides a robust foundation for managing assets across all energy markets, from forward transactions to real-time dispatching.
“Our partnership with Kraken significantly improves the performance, reliability, and flexibility of our own assets,” noted Bert Frowijn, Managing Director of Pure Energie. “This allows us to accelerate the integration of renewable energy into the Dutch energy system.”
Charlotte Johnson, General Manager of Flexibility at Kraken, emphasized the shift in global energy needs, saying: “It’s no longer about managing individual assets – it’s about orchestrating demand, wind, solar and storage together through one intelligent, connected operating system.”
