The September Reset: 53% of UK Workers Plan Job Move

As commercial organisations gear up for a final Q4 push, revenue leaders face an operational hurdle. Namely, retaining their top talent. Talent solutions firm Robert Half has just released its latest research. shows 53% of UK professionals intend to look for a new role before the end of the year. In fact, some are already actively job hunting.

The survey of 1,000 UK workers reveals that while economic uncertainty persists, professionals are evaluating their career options. However, salary is no longer the sole driving factor for top talent.

Why Professionals Are Seeking New Horizons

The research shows that workers are shaping their career decisions with a mix of factors. Specifically, these include lifestyle, development, and stability considerations:

  • Work-Life Balance: Achieving a better work-life balance or managing workload pressures was cited as the primary driver for seeking a new role (38%).
  • Career Advancement: Limited opportunities for career progression are pushing 35% of workers to look elsewhere.
  • Benefits and Pay: Seeking improved perks and benefits motivates 34% of respondents, while 29% feel underpaid in their current position.
  • Flexibility & Security: Greater access to remote working options is a key priority for 28%, whilst 22% cite existing job security concerns as their reason to move.

“The labour market remains active, but professionals are becoming increasingly selective about the opportunities they pursue,” said Matt Weston, Senior Managing Director, UK & Ireland at Robert Half. “What we’re seeing is a shift towards more considered career decisions. Professionals want to move forward in their careers, but they also want confidence that a new role will provide development opportunities, culture, and stability.”

Job Security Remains Front of Mind

Despite widespread appetite for change, workers are remaining cautious. A staggering 92% of UK professionals state that job security is either “extremely important” (53%) or “very important” (39%) when evaluating career choices.

Conversely, for workers choosing to stay put, workplace flexibility (49%) and genuine job fulfillment (49%) were listed as the main anchors keeping them with their current employers.

What This Means for Commercial Leaders

For sales and revenue executives, the “September Reset” represents both a retention risk and a recruitment opportunity. As teams work to hitting year-end targets, leaders must balance high commercial expectations with clear employee development.

Organisations hoping to secure top sales, marketing, and enablement talent through Q4 must offer more than baseline compensation. Providing clear internal progression routes, flexible working models, robust benefit structures, and long-term organisational stability will be essential to keeping top performers engaged, and attracting high-calibre recruits from competitors.
