Barnsley has launched two new government-backed AI training schemes to help jobseekers build practical digital skills and secure future careers.
Six months after becoming the UK’s first designated “Tech Town,” the borough is testing how artificial intelligence can strengthen local economies. Ultimately, the lessons learned in Barnsley will serve as a national model for upskilling 10 million UK workers by 2030.
Bridging the Commercial AI Skills Gap
First, the £400,000 AI Career Launchpad, delivered in partnership with Barnsley College, offers a flexible route into tech-enabled roles.
- Paid Business Placements: Learners complete six months of flexible training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship. Crucially, government-funded paid placements allow local businesses to bring fresh digital skills into their teams.
- Focus on Practical Execution: Roles will focus on helping companies use AI tools, streamline customer services, reduce administrative overhead, and manage data systems efficiently.
- Open-Source National Curriculum: Once completed, the curriculum will be shared freely across the UK. Consequently, colleges nationwide can adopt the model to expand regional talent pools.
Preparing Jobseekers for Modern Workplaces
Second, the Getting Job Ready with AI pilot launches in September through Jobcentre Plus. Specifically, this scheme helps jobseekers use digital tools to search for roles, tailor application materials, and practice interview techniques. Furthermore, it ensures candidates understand how modern employers use digital systems in day-to-day operations.
As Employment Minister Andrew Western noted: “In Barnsley, we’re testing how AI can help jobseekers build the confidence and skills they need to compete for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
Real-World Impact for Regional Business
Practical AI adoption is already delivering measurable commercial gains for regional firms. For instance, Amy Wilkinson, Marketing Manager at Anderson Power Generation, built a custom HR application through Barnsley’s existing IgniteAI initiative. As a result, the tool completely streamlined internal administrative tasks, freeing staff to focus on commercial productivity.
“AI is enabling people to do things they didn’t think possible and to unlock economic potential,” Wilkinson explained.
Applications for the AI Career Launchpad open this autumn, with the first cohort starting in early 2027.
